B&B Carousell, Historic carousel in Coney Island, Brooklyn, United States
The B&B Carousell is a wooden carousel in Coney Island, Brooklyn, with fifty hand-carved horses and two chariots arranged around a central rotating mechanism. It stands inside Luna Park, close to the boardwalk, and is covered by a decorative canopy structure.
William F. Mangels built this carousel between 1906 and 1909, and the original horse sculptures were made by Marcus Illions. It has stayed in operation at the same location ever since, surviving decades of change along the Coney Island waterfront.
The hand-carved wooden horses are painted in bright colors and decorated with ornamental details typical of early American fairground craft. Riding this carousel has been a Coney Island tradition for generations, and today families still line up to take a turn.
The carousel sits inside Luna Park and is easy to find from the boardwalk, as it is visible from a short distance. Younger children who cannot sit securely on their own should ride with an adult.
One of the original wooden horses was given a commemorative saddle in 1908 to mark the 100th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's birth. This connection to a national anniversary is an unusual detail for a fairground ride and sets this carousel apart from others of its era.
