Brainerd is a county seat in Crow Wing County, Minnesota. The town spreads along the Mississippi River and includes residential neighborhoods, schools, parks, and commercial streets.
A railroad company built a bridge across the river in 1870, and a settlement formed here three years later. The railroad brought workers and commerce to the region.
The name honors David Brainerd, an 18th-century missionary who worked among indigenous communities. Lakes and forests shape the surroundings, and residents spend much of their time on the water or in nature.
The town is reached by several highways, and parking is available near shops and public buildings. For travelers, there are gas stations, restaurants, and lodging along the main roads.
A bank robbery in 1933 brought the town into criminal history when Baby Face Nelson and his gang stole cash here. The bank still stands in the center of town today.
