Colgate Clock, Outdoor clock in Jersey City, US
The Colgate Clock is a massive turret clock on the Hudson River waterfront in Jersey City with a diameter of about 50 feet. Its eight sides and large hands measuring roughly 20 feet long make it visible from considerable distances.
The clock was built in 1924 to replace an earlier timepiece dating from 1906, reflecting the company's long presence in the city. This replacement marked the peak of manufacturing activity in Jersey City.
The clock reflects Jersey City's industrial past and connects to the soap-making heritage that flourished here for decades. Its octagonal shape echoes the soap bars that became known around the world.
The clock is easily visible from the water and from various viewpoints along the waterfront. If you want to see it up close, keep in mind that the building itself is not open to the public.
The timekeeping mechanism is connected to the US Naval Observatory and continuously adjusted through a specialized master clock system. This precision links the waterfront timepiece to the nation's time synchronization network.
