Jersey City 9/11 Memorial

The Jersey City 9/11 Memorial is a waterfront monument made from steel girders salvaged from the original World Trade Center, welded together to form a large letter A. This artwork sits along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway at a prominent location visible from across the river.

The site initially served as a triage station during the September boatlift in 2001, where people were evacuated from lower Manhattan. Later it was transformed into a memorial to preserve the historical moment for future generations.

The black granite panel displays the names of 38 Jersey City residents who died in the attacks, with inscriptions that reflect the Lower Manhattan skyline. Visitors can read these names and reflect on the community's losses at the waterfront location.

The memorial is easy to reach, located directly along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway at the intersection of Grand Street and Exchange Place. From here you can enjoy a waterfront walk and views across the river toward Manhattan.

During the emergency response, rescue workers initially mistook one part of the artwork for something unexpected. This moment of confusion reflects just how intense and chaotic the first hours were after the attacks.
