Wildwood, Beach resort city in Cape May County, New Jersey
Wildwood is a beach city in Cape May County on the Atlantic coast of New Jersey, stretching across an island roughly five miles long. The boardwalk runs for 38 blocks along the shore and connects several amusement parks, water attractions, and numerous shops with restaurants and entertainment venues.
The settlement began in 1609 and developed into a major vacation destination from the late 19th century onward through the expansion of tourism infrastructure. Large-scale development of beach facilities and hotels fundamentally transformed the island and attracted visitors from nearby cities.
The Doo Wop Experience Museum displays exhibits about the 1950s music movement that shaped the architectural design of many local motels and buildings. This characteristic style with neon-lit signs and colorful geometric forms still defines the cityscape along the coast today.
The city offers roughly 8,000 hotel rooms and 3,000 vacation rentals for travelers with different needs and budgets. Tramcars run along the entire boardwalk and make it easier to move between different sections of the beachfront.
The National Marbles Hall of Fame preserves a large collection of marble game artifacts and commemorates championship tournaments held on the beach since 1922. The tradition of these competitions has made the city a longtime center of this classic children's game culture.
