Caribbean Motel, hotel in New Jersey, Verenigde Staten van Amerika
The Caribbean Motel is a lodging facility built in 1957 with Googie architecture style, featuring curved shapes, large neon signage, and vivid colors in Wildwood Crest. The low-slung building includes a crescent-shaped swimming pool, rooms decorated with 1950s tropical motifs, and oversized plastic palm trees that give the place a playful character.
The motel was built in 1957 by brothers Lou and Will Morey, designed to stand out from other lodging with entertaining architecture. After facing demolition threats in 2004, new owners saved the building and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
The motel embodies the spirit of 1950s beach vacation culture, with its tropical design that drew visitors from across the region. The bright colors and playful shapes tell the story of an era when travel felt like a joyful, carefree adventure.
Parking is limited to one space per room, with additional vehicles requiring street parking at guest expense. The swimming pool operates from May through early October, and visitors should know the motel is entirely smoke-free and does not allow pets.
The motel's large neon sign was once the largest in Wildwood Crest and was not approved by local authorities, yet the owners kept it anyway. The oversized plastic palm trees were among the first of their kind in the area and later inspired many other motels to use similar tropical decoration.
