Poverty Beach

Poverty Beach is a sandy shoreline on Cape May's northeastern coast, stretching along the harbor boundary. Portions of the beach are occupied by the United States Coast Guard Training Center, which affects access to certain areas.

The beach took its current form through land reclamation projects in the early 1900s, which transformed the surrounding salt marshes. This reshaping created the modern Cape May Harbor and permanently altered the coastal landscape.

Local residents come here to swim, walk, and enjoy a quieter side of Cape May away from the main tourist crowds. The beach offers a place where families and visitors can spend time without the intensity of more popular shoreline areas.

The beach can be reached from several access points, but the presence of the Coast Guard facility means some areas may be restricted or closed. Arriving early and checking tide conditions will help you find the best spots for your visit.

Military bunkers from past defense efforts remain visible along the shoreline, reminding visitors of the area's strategic importance. These structures offer a glimpse into the coastal defense systems that once protected this location.
