Emlen Physick Estate, Victorian house museum in Cape May, United States.
The Emlen Physick Estate is a Stick-style mansion with 18 rooms located in Cape May that displays distinctive architectural features throughout. Its exterior shows inverted chimneys, large hooded dormers, and decorative wooden brackets that create the building's characteristic appearance.
The estate was designed in 1879 by architect Frank Furness for Dr. Emlen Physick Jr. and served as a residence for three generations of the wealthy Physick family from Philadelphia. The mansion represents an important example of late 19th-century architectural innovation.
The house displays how wealthy families lived in the late 1800s through its original furnishings and period decorations that show daily routines and household practices. Visitors can observe the personal items and arrangements that reveal the lifestyle of that era.
The grounds cover four acres with pathways to explore and include separate buildings such as the Carriage House and a gallery space. The on-site cafe operates only during the warmer months, so plan accordingly if refreshments are needed.
This is the only residential building designed by Frank Furness that is open to the public for tours in the entire United States. The architect was known for his innovative designs, but only this house allows visitors to experience his residential architecture from the inside.
