Rumson, Residential borough in Monmouth County, US.
Rumson is a borough along the Shrewsbury River in New Jersey that combines tree-lined streets with access to the water. Quiet neighborhoods share space with public green areas and small boat docks scattered across the community.
The borough was formed in 1907 through an act of the New Jersey Legislature from parts of Shrewsbury Township. This formation came during a wave of municipal reorganization across Monmouth County in the early 20th century.
The Tredwell House, constructed in 1670 and spanning 700 acres, represented the earliest architectural heritage of Rumson until its destruction in 2006.
Most streets run parallel or perpendicular to the riverbank, making it easy to orient yourself across the borough. Several small parks sit within walking distance of residential areas and offer access to the water.
The name may derive from Navarumsunk, a Lenape word for this area along the river. Early settlers adopted the shortened term after contact with the native inhabitants.
