Lux Mundi, Religious monument in Monroe, Ohio, United States
Lux Mundi is a 52-foot tall statue of Jesus located at Solid Rock Church, showing Christ leaning forward with outstretched arms in a welcoming posture. The monument is constructed from polymer composite material and steel and stands immediately adjacent to Interstate 75.
The statue was designed and built in 2012 by Tom Tsuchiya as a replacement for an earlier sculpture called King of Kings, which was struck by lightning and destroyed in 2010. The new structure incorporates improved materials and protection systems to better withstand such natural forces.
The statue is known locally as 'Hug Me Jesus' because of its outstretched arms and forward-leaning posture. This gesture reflects the welcoming spirit that defines the church's approach to its community.
The monument is easily visible from the highway and can be viewed from a public parking area at its base. The structure is protected by a lightning suppression system and fire-resistant materials, so it remains accessible to visitors regardless of weather conditions throughout the day.
At the base of the statue sits a cascading water fountain with decorative rocks, creating a dynamic setting below the towering figure. This water feature adds a contemplative element that transforms the site from a simple roadside landmark into a small gathering space.
