The University of North Alabama is a public university in Florence, Alabama, occupying a campus of 130 acres with academic halls, laboratories, and residential buildings serving more than 8,000 students. The institution opened in 1830 as LaGrange College and became the first state-supported teachers college south of the Ohio River in 1872. During the 20th century, it grew into a comprehensive university with four colleges and research programs in the sciences and humanities.
