The fortification was built in 1746 to defend Portsmouth Harbor and underwent several construction phases through World War II. The site was named after a Revolutionary War commander who led forces in New Hampshire.
The fort bears the name of John Stark, a Revolutionary War commander who led New Hampshire forces during the Battle of Bennington in 1777.
The grounds are accessible daily from 5 AM to 8 PM with walking trails and gun batteries to explore. Visitors should exercise care around open areas and older military structures.
Four distinct artillery batteries from different eras remain on the grounds, showing how coastal defense evolved over several decades. Each battery reveals changes in weapon technology and defensive thinking through its design and construction.
