Whaleback Light, Maritime lighthouse at Piscataqua River mouth, Kittery, United States
The granite Whaleback Light stands 15 meters high at the entrance of Piscataqua River, featuring a white tower with black trim and lantern room.
The original lighthouse from 1830 was replaced in 1872 with the current structure, which received automated mechanisms in 1963 for enhanced maritime navigation.
The lighthouse represents maritime navigation advancement in New England, earning recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
The lighthouse emits two white flashes every ten seconds and remains visible up to 14 nautical miles, with a fog signal producing two blasts every 30 seconds.
The American Lighthouse Foundation and Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses maintain this offshore granite structure, which sits on a rocky outcrop near Wood Island.
