Mount Washington Hotel

The Mount Washington Hotel is a Renaissance Revival building with a red roof that spreads across several wings with a large wraparound veranda. The structure sits at the base of the Presidential Range and offers access to the White Mountains.

The building opened in 1902 as a luxury resort for wealthy guests from Eastern cities. In July 1944, representatives from 44 nations met here to set new rules for international trade and currency after the war.

The building takes its name from the highest peak in the Northeast and attracts visitors interested in the origins of the modern financial system. The rooms display markers showing which delegations stayed there during the conference.

The resort sits away from main highways and requires a drive through the mountains. Winter guests can use ski packages included in the stay, while summer visitors find hiking trails nearby.

The entrance hall displays a replica of the gold plaque where representatives from around the world signed their names for the new financial rules. Tours explain which politicians worked in which rooms and how the negotiations unfolded.
