Lenox, Historic town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts
Lenox is a town in Berkshire County in western Massachusetts, situated at about 366 meters elevation and surrounded by forests and rolling hills. The settlement spreads across rural terrain with residential neighborhoods typical of this New England region.
The town was founded in 1750 by Jonathan and Sarah Hinsdale from Connecticut and served as the county seat from 1784 to 1868. This administrative role gave it early importance before that function moved to Pittsfield.
The Tanglewood Music Festival brings classical performances to the region each summer, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra making this area its seasonal home. Visitors notice how music shapes the character of the town during festival season.
The area is relatively sparsely populated with residential neighborhoods and educational facilities distributed across the landscape. Visitors should plan to have a car, as attractions and the surrounding Berkshire region are spread out.
Between 1880 and 1920, the place became a favored retreat for wealthy families who built grand summer homes throughout the area. This period shaped the town's appearance and left architectural traces from that era of prosperity.
