Evart, human settlement in Osceola County, Michigan, United States of America
Evart is a small city in the center of Michigan's lower peninsula that sits along the Muskegon River. The town has quiet streets lined with older buildings from the 1800s and early 1900s, a modest downtown with local shops and restaurants, and green spaces where residents and visitors can walk and enjoy the natural surroundings.
The town was founded in the early 1850s when two men, Delos Blodgett and James Stimson, traveled up the Muskegon River and established a camp. In the 1870s, lumberman Blodgett officially laid out the city, which grew rapidly due to the timber industry that once filled the area.
The name comes from Perry Oliver Everts, a Civil War soldier, though it was misspelled when the town was officially laid out in the early 1870s and the spelling stuck. The community honors this past through parks and memorials dedicated to early settlers and soldiers who served.
As a small town, Evart offers modest amenities including gas stations, grocery stores, and a few local lodging options for visitors. The river and surrounding walking trails make it a good stop for those looking to explore rural scenery and enjoy the slow pace of country life.
Private Joseph Guyton from Evart was the first American soldier killed on German soil during World War One in 1918. The town honors his memory with a park and bridge bearing his name, and holds annual ceremonies to recognize his sacrifice and that of other veterans.
