Washington Bridge, Steel deck arch bridge in Manhattan and The Bronx, United States
Washington Bridge is a steel arch bridge spanning the Harlem River between 181st Street in Manhattan and University Avenue in the Bronx. The roadway accommodates six lanes for vehicles and features separate pathways for pedestrians and cyclists on both sides.
The bridge was completed in 1888 by engineers Charles Schneider and Wilhelm Hildenbrand after roughly 20 years of planning and construction. The project relied on steel from Maine and Connecticut and demonstrated advanced building methods of that era.
The bridge links two distinct neighborhoods and is used daily by residents crossing between them. It has become woven into the daily life of both communities over generations.
Pedestrians and cyclists can use dedicated pathways on both sides while vehicles travel on the main roadway. The bridge connects to major streets and expressways at both ends.
The structure features two main steel arches, each spanning about 155 meters, which exemplify late 19th-century engineering techniques. This design was a notable technical achievement when it was completed.
