Hudson View Gardens, cooperative apartment complex in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan
Hudson View Gardens is a large residential complex in Manhattan composed of multiple interconnected buildings designed in Tudor Revival style with steeply pitched roofs, decorative woodwork, and abundant windows. The four to six story structures feature elevators, stairs, and well-maintained gardens and open areas surrounding the buildings, creating a coherent streetscape with ample natural light in individual units.
Built in the 1920s, Hudson View Gardens was created during a period when apartment living was becoming popular in Manhattan, offering affordable housing designed for middle-class families. The project represented an effort to bring greenery and open spaces into urban residential life while maintaining both comfort and style.
The Tudor Revival design with steeply pitched roofs and decorative woodwork recalls English cottage aesthetics, creating a residential character that residents maintain through careful upkeep of gardens and shared spaces. This deliberate preservation reflects the community's connection to the place and its desire to sustain the neighborhood's identity.
The complex offers proximity to public transportation, making it easy to reach other parts of Manhattan, along with on-site amenities including laundry facilities and parking. Its location near Bennett Park and views of the Hudson River provide convenient access to outdoor recreation while maintaining a quiet residential setting.
Built on a ridge overlooking the Hudson River, it was once the largest housing cooperative project in New York City, intentionally designed by developer Charles V. Paterno to bring garden-like qualities to urban living. Landscape architect Robert B. Cridland deliberately arranged the gardens and open areas to bring nature close to residents while maintaining the compact density of city housing.
