United Palace, Theater and cultural venue in Washington Heights, Manhattan, United States
United Palace is a theater and cultural venue in Washington Heights that occupies an entire city block with more than 3,000 seats. The interior combines architectural elements from Egyptian, Aztec, Classical, Islamic, Mayan, and Mughal traditions in a distinctive way.
The building opened in 1930 as Loew's 175th Street Theatre and served as a major vaudeville and movie house for decades. It operated in that role until 1969, after which it was later transformed into a modern cultural center.
The theater serves as a gathering place for people throughout the city who attend concerts, film screenings, and classes in its ornate halls. Visitors sit beneath elaborate painted ceilings and walls decorated with artistic elements drawn from many parts of the world.
The venue is located on Broadway in Washington Heights and is easily reached by public transportation. Recent renovations completed in late 2021 improved the sound and viewing experience throughout the building.
The city's Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the building as a landmark in 2016 because it merges six different global architectural styles under one roof. This unusual combination of designs from distant regions makes it stand out as a remarkable structure.
