Bridge Apartments, Residential tower complex in Washington Heights, Manhattan, US.

Bridge Apartments is a residential complex of four 32-story towers built directly above the Trans-Manhattan Expressway near the George Washington Bridge. The complex contains 960 apartment units spread across the four buildings, designed primarily for middle-income families.

Construction began in 1961 after the Kratter Corporation purchased the air rights above the expressway from New York City. This unusual project emerged from the idea of using the empty space above an existing highway for residential purposes.

The buildings feature aluminum cladding on their facades, which was an uncommon material choice for high-rise structures when they were built. This design decision shaped how the complex looks and represented an experimental approach to residential tower construction.

The complex is situated directly near the George Washington Bridge and has good access to transportation networks. Visitors should be aware that being positioned above a heavily trafficked expressway means traffic noise may be noticeable, particularly in the lower floors.

A notable feature is that the complex sits on air rights above a functioning expressway, which was an innovative and unconventional housing solution at the time. This construction method allowed a residential area to be created in a densely built neighborhood without requiring street-level land.
