Chebeague Island

Chebeague Island is a residential island off the coast of Maine with homes, roads, and year-round residents. The land is long and narrow, surrounded by water, with views across the ocean from many spots.

In the 1800s, the island was known for quarrying and shipping granite stone to the mainland. This work shaped the community and brought prosperity during that era.

The homes on the island reflect styles built by maritime workers when shipping was the main livelihood here. Walking through the residential areas, you can see how people have adapted these older structures while maintaining their character over generations.

To reach the island, you take a ferry from Portland that runs throughout the year in varying schedules. Bring a vehicle or plan to walk, as most points on the island are spread across the land.

A nine-hole golf course was built here in 1920 and offers views of the surrounding water from the fairways. The course's location between water and land creates an unusual playing experience for golfers.
