St. Louis Limestone, Limestone formation in Illinois and Missouri, United States

The St. Louis Limestone extends across the Midwest region with sedimentary layers containing scattered chert beds and various fossil deposits throughout its structure.

First documented by George Engelmann in 1847, this formation dates back to the Mississippian period, approximately 330 to 340 million years ago.

The formation provides geologists and researchers with valuable data about prehistoric marine environments through its preserved fossil records of corals and bryozoans.

The formation ranges from 200 to 500 feet in thickness, reaching its maximum depth in southeastern Illinois while becoming thinner toward the northwest.

The presence of limestone breccias and evaporite deposits within the formation indicates periods of ancient shallow seas and subsequent mineral crystallization.
