Escape from Pompeii

Escape from Pompeii is a water ride at Busch Gardens Williamsburg that takes guests on a boat journey through multiple theatrical scenes with fire effects. The experience culminates in a 50-foot plunge into a splash pool at the end of the ride.

The attraction opened in 1995 as part of the park's 20th anniversary celebration and was constructed by engineering company Intamin. The project combined modern ride technology with historical storytelling from that era.

The ride recreates the Mount Vesuvius eruption through theatrical scenes that incorporate Roman architectural details throughout the journey. Visitors experience this historical narrative as they travel by boat through the staged environment.

Guests should expect to get completely wet during this experience and can store personal belongings in lockers located near the entrance area. Height restrictions apply to ensure visitor safety on the ride.

The ride's fire effects system requires substantial amounts of natural gas to operate continuously throughout the building. This intense heat production contributes to the immersive nature of the experience visitors encounter.
