Loch Ness Monster, Steel roller coaster in Williamsburg, United States.
Loch Ness Monster is a steel roller coaster in Williamsburg, Virginia, running through the Scottish-themed area of Busch Gardens. The track includes two interlocking vertical loops, a spiral and several hills along approximately 3,240 feet (987 meters).
The coaster opened in June 1978 as the first in the world with interlocking vertical loops. Arrow Development designed the structure and set new standards in steel coaster construction.
The ride draws on Scottish legend and passes through an area decorated with Celtic motifs and mist effects. Waiting guests see maps and expedition gear that recall highland journeys.
Visitors at least 48 inches (122 centimeters) tall can ride and are secured with over-the-shoulder restraints. Each of the three trains holds 28 people and wait times vary with park attendance.
The interlocking loops remain the only ones worldwide and pass through a short tunnel section with a helix. The layout uses two lift systems that bring the train to different heights.
