Big Bad Wolf, Steel roller coaster in Oktoberfest section of Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Virginia
Big Bad Wolf was a steel roller coaster in the Oktoberfest section of Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Virginia. The hanging cars swung freely beneath the track and followed a route through the woods down toward a recreated Rhine riverbank.
Arrow Dynamics built this installation in 1984 as one of the first suspended coasters in the country. It operated until 2009 and shaped a generation of park visitors.
The name comes from the German fairy tale about the evil wolf chasing through a recreated Bavarian village. Riders swung past half-timbered houses and experienced the story from a new angle.
The ride lasted about three minutes and passed through heavily wooded terrain with a major drop near the end. Visitors should remember that this coaster no longer exists and has been replaced by another installation.
The cars hung freely beneath the track and swung far to the side during turns, giving many riders the feeling of almost touching the ground or trees. This swinging effect made the installation especially popular with younger visitors.
