Grand Mere State Park

Grand Mere State Park is a protected natural area along Lake Michigan spanning about 985 acres, characterized by dense forests, inland water bodies, and tall sand dunes. The landscape includes three separate lakes within its boundaries and connects these to a beach section along the shoreline.

The park was established in 1976 and immediately designated as a National Natural Landmark because of its ecological value. This recognition acknowledged the area's importance for conservation efforts.

The French name reflects the historical influence of New France colonists in the Great Lakes region. This linguistic connection to early settlement remains visible in how the landscape is named today.

Reaching the Lake Michigan beach requires climbing steep sand dunes, though a paved trail provides an organized route for the hike. It is wise to allow enough time for the walk and wear sturdy footwear.

The landscape contains three separate inland lakes shaped by glacial activity, but historical records suggest five lakes once existed in this location. This change reveals how natural processes transform terrain over time.
