Capitol Hill, settlement on the island of Saipan
Capitol Hill is a village on Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands that serves as the main administrative hub. The area contains the Governor's Office, the legislative building, the US Post Office, and various government departments arranged along main roads with clean streets and maintained buildings.
The village was established in 1948 and briefly housed a secret CIA training base for Chinese guerrillas during that period. Since 1962 it has served as the official administrative center of Saipan, hosting the island's key government institutions.
The village takes its name from Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. and serves as the administrative center where residents conduct daily business with government offices. The area hosts cultural groups that organize events showcasing local music, dance, and traditional crafts throughout the year.
The village is easily accessible via the main road Route 31, also called Isa Drive, which connects it with other parts of the island. The weather stays warm and humid throughout the year, with hot summers and frequent rainfall during certain months, so plan accordingly.
The village sits strategically between two small towns called Tanapag and San Vicente, making it a natural stopping point for travelers crossing the island. This central location likely influenced the decision to establish the government seat here.
