Levittown, Residential community in Nassau County, New York.
Levittown is a planned residential community in Nassau County, New York, with more than 17,000 single-family homes spread across several neighborhoods. Shopping centers, parks, and community facilities are located between the residential streets, following a uniform grid pattern.
The Levitt and Sons Company built this community between 1947 and 1951 to provide affordable housing for returning veterans of World War II. During peak construction, assembly teams completed up to 30 houses per day, which dramatically accelerated suburbanization in the United States.
The name comes from the Levitt and Sons construction company, which built thousands of nearly identical single-family homes in a few standard floor plans. Over the decades, many homeowners have modified their properties, making the streetscapes look more varied than they did during the original construction period.
The community has several public schools, libraries, and shopping centers connected by an extensive local road network. Visitors also find playgrounds and recreational facilities spread across the different neighborhoods.
This was the first large development in the United States where houses were mass-produced using assembly-line methods, reducing construction time per unit to just a few days. Each building step was carried out by specialized crews who moved from lot to lot repeating the same task.
