Medinah Country Club, Private golf complex in Illinois, United States.
Medinah Country Club is a private golf complex in Illinois with three separate courses across a large property near Chicago. Each of the three eighteen-hole courses follows its own terrain and difficulty level, with water hazards and rolling greens between mature trees.
The golf club was founded in 1924 by a fraternal order that favored Eastern-inspired architecture. The three courses were built between 1925 and 1928, with the third course later becoming a venue for major national and international tournaments.
The name comes from the Arabic word for the holy city of Medina, which inspired the Shriners who founded the property. The main building shows North African design through its arches, tiles, and bright courtyards that create a Mediterranean atmosphere.
The property lies in a suburb west of Chicago and is accessible only to members and invited guests. Anyone visiting the grounds should wear proper golf attire and note that all facilities remain private.
The third course measures over 7000 yards and ranks among the longest tournament courses in North America. Five major competitions took place here, with the 2012 Ryder Cup marking the first time Europe came back from behind on American soil.
