Cosley Zoo, Educational animal facility in Wheaton, Illinois.
Cosley Zoo is a small zoo in Wheaton, Illinois, focused on native wildlife and farm animals. The enclosures are largely open-air, allowing close views of animals such as red foxes, turtles, and white-tailed deer.
The zoo opened in 1974 on farmland and started as a modest exhibit with a few native species and farm animals. Over the years, more animals were added and education programs were developed to serve the local community.
The zoo takes its name from Raymond Cosley, a local farmer whose land was originally used for the project. Visitors today can see animals like the white-tailed deer that are familiar to many Illinois residents from everyday life.
Most of the pathways are outdoors, so dry weather and comfortable shoes make the visit easier. The grounds are compact enough to explore at a relaxed pace, which works well for families with young children.
From November through December, the grounds take on a festive character with holiday lights and visitors can buy Christmas trees on site. This seasonal side of the zoo draws a very different crowd from those who come during the rest of the year.
