The Russell R. Kirt Prairie spans 18 acres of land, featuring tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, hill prairie, swale, marsh, and wetland ecosystems near the Health and Science Center.
Professor Russell R. Kirt initiated the restoration of this former farmland in 1974, collecting native seeds and seedlings from locations within a 40-kilometer radius of the site.
The prairie functions as an educational laboratory where students participate in ecological research, seed collection, controlled burns, and environmental conservation activities.
Visitors can access a detailed Trail Guide booklet near the entrance, providing information about North American prairies, plant species, and ecological relationships.
The land maintains 293 plant species across 31 families, including rare varieties like Dalea foliosa, contributing to Illinois prairie preservation efforts.
