Mount Sinai, hamlet located within the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York, United States
Mount Sinai is a small residential hamlet on Long Island's north coast in Suffolk County that sits along the Long Island Sound shoreline. The area consists of quiet streets lined with homes and small businesses, with trees and lawns that give it a friendly appearance.
The area was originally inhabited by the Seatocot tribes who called it Nonowatuck, a name relating to local water features. European settlement began in the 1660s with farming, and by the 1800s the community became connected to shipbuilding and sail-making before transitioning to a residential neighborhood in the 1900s.
Mount Sinai took its current name in the 1840s when the first postmaster, Charles Phillips, chose it for its sound and biblical reference. The community shows its connection to the water through active fishing harbors and boat docks where residents and visitors spend time on the water.
Cedar Beach is the main recreation spot and requires valid identification for access, offering clean beaches for relaxation and nearby boat docking facilities. Navigation is straightforward, with well-maintained roads connecting neighborhoods, parks, and beach areas, with most visitors walking or driving to local spots.
The place was originally known as Old Mans but was renamed to Mount Vernon before that name was already taken in New York, leading to its current designation. A notable feature is the Inline One Skate Park with indoor and outdoor facilities that attracts skaters of all levels, offering an unexpected recreational spot in this small community.
