East Islip, hamlet and CDP in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York, United States

East Islip is an unincorporated community in Suffolk County on Long Island that spreads across residential neighborhoods with large homes and mature trees. The area extends from the bay coast inland to quiet streets, combining residential sections with parks and water access.

The settlement was founded in the 1600s and bears the name of William Nicoll, who established a large estate called Islip Grange in the late 1680s after purchasing land from Native Americans. Over the centuries, the area became a favored residence for wealthy families, and their estates were gradually transformed into residential neighborhoods and open spaces.

The community reflects its wealthy past through neighborhoods where large estates once stood and are now remembered in the grand homes and tree-lined streets that remain. Residents value these connections to history, maintaining properties that echo the area's earlier character as a retreat for prominent families.

East Islip is primarily a residential area, so a car is the best way to navigate the community. Visit the bay-front areas for beaches and marinas, while the parks inland offer quieter walks and open spaces for families.

Brookwood Hall, originally a private mansion of the wealthy Thorne family, now serves as a venue for community events and preserves the area's history as a haven for the elite. This building shows how private structures from the past evolved into public spaces for all residents.
