Sagtikos Manor, Colonial manor house in West Bay Shore, New York
Located along Montauk Highway, Sagtikos Manor spans across ten acres featuring a family cemetery, carriage house, buttery, and walled garden.
Built in 1697 by Stephanus Van Cortlandt, the first American-born mayor of New York City, the manor expanded from four rooms to forty-two rooms over centuries.
The manor houses period furnishings from the Thompson-Gardiner family, reflecting three centuries of architectural and decorative evolution in American domestic life.
The manor opens for guided tours from June to September, with costumed docents leading visitors through the historical rooms and gardens.
President George Washington stayed overnight in one of the upstairs bedrooms on April 21, 1790, during his Long Island tour.
