Fire Island Light, Maritime landmark in Suffolk County, United States
Fire Island Light is a lighthouse located in Suffolk County, standing 51 meters tall with distinctive black stonework interrupted by a white stripe around its middle. The tower is topped with a black lantern room that houses the light beacon.
The original lighthouse was built in 1826 as a smaller structure before being completely replaced in 1858. The current stone tower has served mariners ever since its construction during the mid-19th century.
The lighthouse represented the first sign of American soil for numerous European immigrants arriving through New York Harbor during the late 1800s.
Access to the tower is gained through Robert Moses State Park Field 5, where visitors gather before tours. Climbing the interior stairs offers views from the top, though you should check ahead for seasonal availability.
The island itself has shifted over time through sand deposits, moving the lighthouse location relative to the shoreline. What once stood near the western edge now sits nearly 8 kilometers away from Democrat Point at the island's end.
