Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park, State park arboretum in Great River, US
Bayard Cutting Arboretum is a state park covering more than 600 acres along the Connetquot River where coniferous and broadleaf trees from Europe, Asia, and North America grow throughout the property. The grounds include a manor house with outbuildings, walking paths through wooded areas, and open lawn spaces.
William Bayard Cutting partnered with landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted in 1887 to develop the property's layout and plantings. The estate became one of the last major country properties built along Long Island's South Shore before the region transformed.
The manor house and grounds reveal how wealthy families of the late 1800s engaged with nature and plants as part of their estates. You can see how people of that era arranged landscapes to display their collections and horticultural interests.
The park opens Tuesday through Sunday, and visitors should wear comfortable shoes since exploring the grounds means walking through various terrain. Most pathways are well-maintained with shaded areas beneath trees and open lawns for rest.
The property holds one of the oldest private golf courses in the United States, built in 1895 and designed by Willie Dunn. This designer also created another well-known golf course on the American East Coast.
