Hicksville, Suburban community in Nassau County, New York State.
Hicksville is a community in Nassau County on Long Island in New York State with residential neighborhoods and commercial areas. The center sits at the crossing of major roads, where stores, service providers and the railroad station are located.
Valentine Hicks purchased land in 1834 and built a station three years later on the new railroad line connecting agricultural producers to New York. After World War Two the area shifted from farmland to suburban housing when numerous families moved here.
The name honors Valentine Hicks, a Quaker who owned property here in the 19th century. Today, South Asian grocery stores and restaurants line parts of the main roads, while residential streets house families from different backgrounds.
The railroad station connects the community to Manhattan and other parts of Long Island at regular intervals throughout the day. Drivers will find several main roads here that lead in different directions and provide access to neighboring communities.
Before World War Two, large amounts of cucumbers were grown here for the Heinz Company until a plant disease struck the fields. Farmers then switched to potatoes, which shaped the landscape until urbanization transformed the area.
