Centereach, census-designated place in Suffolk County, New York, United States
Centereach is an unincorporated community on Long Island in Suffolk County, New York, made up of residential streets, small shops, and local businesses. Middle Country Road runs through it from east to west, while Nicolls Road crosses it from north to south, forming the main grid that connects the different neighborhoods.
The area was originally called West Middle Island and then New Village before receiving the name Centereach in 1916, a reference to its position near the center of Long Island. After World War II, farmland gave way to housing as families moved in and new neighborhoods took shape throughout the following decades.
Many families in Centereach trace their roots to European immigrants, particularly from Italy, Ireland, Germany, and Poland. Walking through the neighborhood, you notice small family-run businesses and local gathering spots that reflect this mix of origins.
Centereach has no train station of its own, so the nearest rail option is Ronkonkoma station, a short drive away. Buses run along Middle Country Road and provide a practical alternative for getting around locally without a car.
The junction of Middle Country Road and Nicolls Road is home to the first grade-separated interchange ever built in New York State. This road feature was put in place as traffic grew when the area began expanding after the war.
