The New Madrid Seismic Zone is a major seismic zone and a prolific source of intraplate earthquakes.
In the winter of 1811-1812 three very large earthquakes devastated the area and were felt throughout most of the nation.
They were by far the largest to hit the eastern part of the U.S. since the country was settled by Europeans.
Today, the region has numerous minor quakes but also has the potential for more large earthquakes.
The New Madrid Seismic Zone is named after the town of New Madrid, Missouri where the largest historical earthquake occurred.
