Reelfoot Lake, Natural lake and sag pond in Lake County and Obion County, Tennessee, US.
Reelfoot Lake is a natural lake in northwest Tennessee, where it spreads across marshes and shallow basins lined with bald cypress trees. The water divides into several sections connected by narrow channels that form tight passages between the rows of trees.
Before the earthquakes of 1811 and 1812, the Reelfoot River flowed through forested land here. The tremors caused the ground to sink and created depressions that filled with water, forming the current lake.
Native American tribes utilized the lake's resources extensively, establishing settlements along its shores and developing fishing techniques specific to these waters.
The adjacent state park offers access through several entrances with boat launches, walking trails, and observation towers for watching birds and other wildlife. The water remains shallow year-round, allowing paddleboats and flat-bottomed boats to navigate through the stands of trees.
Until 2003, this was the only body of water in the world where commercial fishers could legally catch crappie, a practice rooted in state permits and traditional methods. The lake now holds the distinction of being Tennessee's sole large natural body of water without artificial dams or barriers.
