Gallipolis Island is a river island in the Ohio River between Ohio and West Virginia. It stretches several hundred meters across the water and faces the shoreline of Gallipolis City.
French settlers discovered the island in 1770 and found wild grapes growing there, which they used to produce wine. The location became an important trading point in the early history of the region.
During the 1840s, the island transformed into a recreational destination with beach access, picnic areas, and a playground for community gatherings.
The island is managed by the West Virginia Land Trust and is difficult to access since it is surrounded by water. Visitors should check conditions before visiting, as access and site conditions change with the seasons.
The island once covered about 85 acres but has shrunk significantly due to erosion and flooding over the years. After restoration efforts, it will eventually become part of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
