Mitchell College, private liberal arts college in New London, Connecticut, United States
Mitchell College is a small private liberal arts college in New London, Connecticut, sitting directly alongside the Thames River. The campus combines older brick buildings with newer facilities and offers programs in fields such as business, psychology, and environmental studies.
The college was founded in 1938 as New London Junior College and renamed in 1950 to honor Alfred Mitchell, whose family had donated the land. Over the following decades, it grew from a two-year junior college into a full four-year institution.
The college takes its name from Alfred Mitchell and his wife Annie Olivia Tiffany Mitchell, whose summer residence is now part of the campus. The former family home is still standing and gives the grounds a residential feel that sets it apart from more conventional campuses.
The campus is easy to walk around, with open paths connecting the buildings and direct access to the riverfront. Arranging a visit in advance is a good idea, as the college offers guided tours that cover the waterfront areas and main facilities.
The college has developed its own learning model specifically aimed at students who struggle with traditional higher education or need extra support. This focus makes it a relatively rare example among American colleges that deliberately center their approach on individual learning needs.
