The track features banked turns at roughly 12 degrees and hosts various racing classes including Late Models, Modifieds, Limited Late Models, and Mini Stocks, running primarily on Friday nights from March through October.
The track was built in 1956 as a dirt circuit about one-third mile long. It was expanded in the 1980s and paved in 1990, then enlarged again in the late 1990s to its current four-tenths mile length, also changing its name from Southern Speedway to Ace Speedway.
The name Ace Speedway references fast, winning racing. The facility serves as a gathering place for local racing fans who come together on Friday evenings to cheer for favorite drivers and share in the excitement of race weekends.
The facility is located on Altamahaw Race Track Road in Elon and is accessible from nearby cities via Interstate I-85/40. Visitors should arrive early to secure good parking and enjoy the full race experience, especially on busy race weekends when the venue fills up quickly.
Several drivers who later became known in NASCAR began their careers on this modest track, including Elliott Sadler and Aric Almirola. The location serves as a crucial stepping stone for aspiring local racers to develop skills before moving to larger racing series.
