Adsit Log Cabin, historic house in Willsboro, New York
The Adsit Log Cabin is an early residential structure in Willsboro, New York, constructed around the 1790s. The small single-room building features hand-hewn logs and sits on a ridge at Willsboro Point with views toward Lake Champlain.
The cabin was built around 1794 or 1795 by Samuel Adsit, a Revolutionary War veteran, and his wife Phebe Perdy. The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 and underwent major restoration work in the 1980s with support from the Town of Willsboro.
The name Adsit comes from Samuel Adsit, a Revolutionary War veteran who built and lived in the cabin with his family. Visitors can see how the furnishings and objects inside reflect the daily life and household routines of early frontier families.
Access to the cabin is seasonal and mainly available on weekends during warmer months. The site sits in a rural area with natural surroundings, so visitors should be prepared for unpaved paths and variable weather conditions.
According to family lore, the residents heard cannon fire from the Battle of Plattsburgh in 1812 echoing across Lake Champlain from this cabin. The story was passed down by Mary Adsit Fowler, a great-granddaughter, who even sent her ten-year-old son to Plattsburgh to find out what had happened during the distant battle.
