Alfonse M. D'Amato United States Courthouse

The Alfonse M. D'Amato United States Courthouse is a 12-story federal court building in Central Islip containing 23 courtrooms with double-height ceilings and abundant natural light, along with 24 judge chambers.

Construction began in the late 1990s on the former grounds of the Central Islip Psychiatric Center and the building opened in 2000. This transformation marked a major shift in the site's purpose from a healthcare facility to a center of justice.

The courthouse lobby features the Gallery of Shorthand, which tells the story of how court reporters have documented legal proceedings over time through different recording methods and writing systems.

The courthouse is located at 100 Federal Plaza and houses the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Visitors should be aware that security screening is required and weekday visits during regular court hours offer the best experience.

The building's upper floors offer views through large windows extending to the Great South Bay, Fire Island, and the Atlantic Ocean. This unexpected natural scenery makes it a striking sight for a courthouse.
