Blydenburgh Park Historic District, Historic district in Smithtown, New York, United States.
Blydenburgh Park Historic District is a former mill and farm property containing eight historic buildings arranged across about 10 acres of grounds. The complex includes a working grist mill from 1798, a Federal-period house with Classical details, a Gothic Revival cottage, and various service buildings connected to agricultural and milling operations.
The mill was built in 1798 and operated as the region's primary grain-processing facility until 1922, when industrial changes made it obsolete. The surrounding buildings, including the main house constructed in the early 1800s, reflect the expansion and prosperity of the property over the 19th century.
The site reflects its role as a working mill and farm community where people lived off the land and water power. The arrangement of buildings and structures tells the story of how families organized their daily lives around these essential resources.
The grounds are open for walking and viewing the exterior of all buildings, though interior access depends on scheduled tours or special events. Plan to spend an hour or more to see all the structures and get a sense of how the property is organized.
One of the buildings on the property features an unusual plaster finish on its second floor that appears nowhere else in the region. This particular technique shows the level of craftsmanship and perhaps experimentation with materials that occurred at the site during its prosperous years.
