Amelung House and Glassworks, Georgian brick house and former glassworks in Urbana, United States.
The Amelung House is a two-story brick building with a stone foundation situated on approximately 40 acres of land in Frederick County. The property encompasses the residence and the remains of the former glassworks that operated on the grounds.
Johann Friedrich Amelung established the New Bremen Glass Manufactory in 1784 as a fine glassware producer. Financial difficulties led to the factory's closure in 1795.
The glassworks produced bottles, windows, and decorative tableware that are now displayed in collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Corning Museum of Glass. These pieces demonstrate the craftsmanship the factory was known for during its years of operation.
The property is located about 9 miles south of Frederick on Park Mills Road. The site is registered on the National Register of Historic Places, marking its historical importance.
The factory employed around 500 workers, including German glassmakers who brought traditional European techniques to the operation. George Washington praised the factory's manufacturing achievements during its working years.
