Antioch Pines Natural Area Preserve, State protected area near Zuni, Virginia.

Antioch Pines Natural Area Preserve is a protected forest along the Blackwater River in Virginia, where loblolly pines and turkey oak trees dominate the landscape. Native plant species that are uncommon elsewhere thrive here in their natural setting.

The oldest pines in this forest took root after the American Civil War and have now grown for over 150 years. They represent a woodland landscape that has persisted from that era to the present.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation maintains this natural area to protect Virginia's rare plant species and preserve native ecosystems.

To visit this area, you need to contact the land steward responsible for the preserve before arriving. There are no visitor facilities on-site, so come prepared for a walk through undeveloped forest.

Two remaining longleaf pines in this forest are part of a restoration program by the state forestry department. These rare trees help ensure the survival of a species that once covered much of the Southeast.
