Antioch Pines Natural Area Preserve, State protected area near Zuni, Virginia.
The 1,157-acre preserve contains extensive loblolly pine and turkey oak forests along the Blackwater River, supporting numerous native plant species.
The oldest pine trees in the preserve originated at the end of the Civil War, reaching heights of 100 feet and diameters of three feet.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation maintains this natural area to protect Virginia's rare plant species and preserve native ecosystems.
Visitors must arrange access with a state-employed land steward in advance, as the preserve has no public facilities.
Two remaining longleaf pines in the preserve contribute to a breeding program by the Virginia Department of Forestry for species restoration.
