Big Woods State Forest, State forest in Sussex County, Virginia
Big Woods State Forest is a woodland area in Sussex County featuring pine forest with loblolly and longleaf pine trees. The land supports deer, wild turkey, bobcats, foxes, and coyotes living among the natural habitat.
About 2,200 acres were purchased by the Virginia Department of Forestry in 2010, establishing the first state forest in southeast Virginia. This conservation effort brought public protection to an important woodland area.
The forest is managed for specific bird species that depend on pine forest habitats to survive. Active woodland practices shape how the land looks and supports wildlife that visitors might spot during their walk.
The forest is open daily during daylight hours and can be reached via Beaverdam Road and Cedar Sign Post Road. Parking is available near the gates where forest roads begin.
The forest connects with neighboring protected areas to form a large connected conservation zone focused on restoring longleaf pine forests. This linked landscape approach allows conservation work to happen on a much larger scale.
