Hunting Quarter, Colonial plantation house in Sussex County, United States.
Hunting Quarter is a colonial plantation house built between 1745 and 1772, featuring a gambrel roof with dormers and a five-bay center hall design. The structure retains its original frame construction and external end chimneys, with additional historic outbuildings including a preserved smokehouse on the grounds.
Captain Henry Harrison, who served under Lieutenant Colonel George Washington during the French and Indian War, built this residence between 1745 and 1772. The construction dates align with a period when Virginia was expanding and establishing itself as a major colonial settlement.
The Harrison family cemetery and a separate burial ground for enslaved people reveal how the plantation was organized and who held power there. Walking through this property, you see the physical layout that enforced the social divisions of colonial times.
The property sits on Hunting Quarter Road, south of its junction with Poole Road, making it accessible by car for those interested in touring the grounds. The buildings and layout remain largely intact, giving visitors a clear sense of how plantation estates were organized and constructed.
A preserved smokehouse still stands on the grounds, offering insight into how colonists preserved meat and other foods before refrigeration existed. The sites of four additional outbuildings remain visible, showing the range of structures needed to run a working plantation.
